I was greatly motivated to create this work by an experience I had in the city in 2021 between two lockdowns. Out at 2am on a weekday, I was struck by the absence of people in the city and how isolated the few people who were still out were. Catching half-glimpses of people, I can’t help but to try to form narratives to fit them. Sometimes more intriguing to me are the remnants of scenes and narratives, whose remains barely give a hint as to what event may have left things the way they are. I set myself the goal to capture images that would It was initially a struggle for me to force myself out on the street; however, after my first serious outing, I was surprised to have my presuppositions about the experience subverted, and I was much better able to manage the task.
When I originally made this work, I was a first year university student desperate to do well. I was very much determined not to have my first body of work be entirely mediocre, particularly going into something that was well and truly out of my comfort zone. At the time I made these photographs I was cognisant of the issues involved in this photography like this; however, I was also very concerned with creating visually striking images. While my photography was not along the lines of someone Bruce Gilden, I would not approach a photographic series like this again.
